Most Tested Geography Topics in WAEC & NECO

From recent WAEC and NECO papers (2020–2024), the following topics come out almost every year. Make sure you understand them very well and practise questions on them.

  • Map work and practicals — scale, distance and area calculation, bearings, gradient, cross profiles, interpretation of contours, settlement and land use on maps.
  • Weather and climate — elements of weather, instruments, world climatic regions, factors affecting climate of Nigeria and Africa.
  • Geomorphology (landforms) — river processes, features of river courses, coastal landforms, desert landforms, types and formation of mountains and plateaux.
  • Population and settlement — population size and density, structure, migration, urbanization, characteristics of rural and urban settlements, problems of cities.
  • Natural resources and economic geography — location and importance of minerals, power resources, agriculture, forestry, fishing, manufacturing industries, transportation and trade.
  • Regional geography of Nigeria — physical setting, relief, drainage, climate, vegetation, soil, population distribution, economic activities and development problems.
  • Regional geography of Africa and the world — major countries and regions, resources, agriculture, industries, trade patterns and regional economic organizations.
  • Environmental issues — pollution, deforestation, desertification, flooding, soil erosion, climate change and measures for environmental conservation.

Exam Tips: How to Read and Interpret Maps

  • Always read the title and legend (key): Before answering any question, look at the title, north arrow and key so you understand what the map shows.
  • Check the scale: Note if the map is large scale or small scale. Practise changing map distance in centimetres to ground distance in kilometres.
  • Study contour patterns: Close contours show steep slopes; wide contours show gentle slopes. Circular contours may indicate hills, peaks or depressions.
  • Use the grid lines: Practise writing four-figure and six-figure grid references to locate places correctly.
  • Practise bearing questions: Always measure clockwise from north using a protractor. Write your answer in three figures, e.g. 045°.
  • Draw neat cross profiles: Mark contour points carefully on graph paper, plot the heights and join with a smooth line. Label important features.
  • Relate map to real life: Imagine how the area looks on the ground: where people will build houses, farm, or locate industries based on relief, rivers and roads.

Key Geography Terms You Must Know

Examiners like asking for definitions. Learn these in simple words and practise writing them from memory.

  • Weather: The condition of the atmosphere at a particular place and time.
  • Climate: The average weather condition of a place over a long period, usually 30 years or more.
  • Latitude: Distance of a place north or south of the Equator, measured in degrees.
  • Longitude: Distance of a place east or west of the Prime Meridian, measured in degrees.
  • Population density: Number of people living in a unit area of land.
  • Migration: Long-term movement of people from one place to another.
  • Natural resource: Any useful material from nature, such as minerals, water, soil, forests or wildlife.
  • Soil erosion: Removal of topsoil by water, wind or human activities.
  • Delta: Low-lying land built up at a river mouth from deposited sediments.
  • Desertification: Process by which fertile land gradually becomes desert.
  • Urbanization: Growth of towns and cities and the increase of people living in them.
  • Sustainable development: Using resources in a way that meets present needs without destroying them for future generations.

Common Geography Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

  • Confusing weather with climate: Always add the time element. Weather is short term; climate is long term.
  • Leaving diagrams rough and unlabelled: Use a ruler, draw clearly, and label all main features. Include title, scale and north arrow where needed.
  • Writing long stories instead of points: WAEC and NECO reward clear points. State your point, then give a brief explanation or example.
  • Ignoring command words: When the question says “List”, only write the points. “Explain” needs point plus short explanation. “Describe” needs full sentences showing features or processes.
  • Not showing working: In map work and calculation questions, write out all steps. You can get marks even if the final answer is slightly wrong.
  • Poor time management: Share your time according to marks. Do easier questions first, then come back to harder ones.
  • Not reading the map properly: Many students answer from memory instead of from the map. Always check the map before you write.
  • Skipping practical questions: Do not leave map work and weather station questions. They are usually straightforward and can give easy marks.

Conclusion: You Can Pass WAEC & NECO Geography with Confidence

Geography is not a “hard” subject when you understand the key ideas and practise regularly. If you use these past questions, mark yourself honestly, and correct your mistakes, your performance will improve quickly. Answer a few questions every day, not only close to exam time.

Believe that you can score high. Many students before you have made A1 and B2 in Geography by following this same method: read, practise, revise and pray. Stay focused, avoid fear, and keep reviewing this page as you prepare for WAEC and NECO. Success is possible for you.
